From the devotional Walking with Jesus by Dave Glock:
Matthew 1:1-17; Mark 1:1; Luke 1:1-4; 3:23-28; John 1:1-18
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. . . . No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. (John 1:1-5, 18)
God had not spoken for over four hundred years. He had warned Israel about dispersion, about being without king or prince (Hosea 3:4), and so it was. But an eternal plan was being executed with precision. Daniel had prophesied of a series of world empires—Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, and the millennial kingdom of Christ. He was very specific in establishing a date marking out 483 years to Triumphal Entry Sunday, the first Palm Sunday. This time span was to be marked from the issuing of the decree to build the wall of Jerusalem under Artaxerxes (Daniel 9:25; Nehemiah 2:1). About 450 years had now elapsed, and whispers from God were being heard. The intensity was increasing! Simeon had been told that he would not die before seeing the Messiah (Luke 2:26), and Anna was looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem (Luke 2:38). The intensity was increasing! Gabriel was commissioned to announce the birth of the forerunner of the Messiah, John the Baptist, to Zacharias, and the message of the miraculous conception of Jesus to Mary (Luke 1:13, 30). Joseph was instructed by an angel in a dream to marry Mary (Matthew 2:20-21). The intensity was increasing!
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:13-14)
The shepherds hurried to the manger to see a newborn baby, to hear God speak! Thirty-three years would remain before the triumphal entry—the years of the life of Christ here on earth. Thirty-three years of God speaking through His Son!
The way each respective gospel account begins is significant. In Mark the introduction is brief, without genealogy, because Jesus is a Servant. In the King of the Jews. In Luke, Jesus is linked with Mary, David, and Adam because Jesus is the Second Man. In John He is the Word, God!
A twenty-foot-high polished stone cross dominates the beautiful Marble Chapel at Emmaus Bible College. As you face the cross you will notice a symbolic figure at the end of each member of the cross. At the foot of the cross is an ox; at the right member, the face of a lion; at the left member, the face of a man; and at the top member, the head of an eagle. These are ancient symbols concerning the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. God speaks and tells us that
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son. (Hebrews 1:1-2)
